Kashmir Valley Schools Resume After Extended Winter Closure

SRINAGAR, March 9: Schools throughout the Kashmir Valley flung open their gates on Monday, marking the end of an extended winter vacation that lasted over three months and bringing a sense of normalcy back to the region’s educational landscape. Students in colorful uniforms could be seen trickling back to classrooms across districts like Srinagar, Anantnag, Baramulla, and Kupwara, ending a period of closure that began in early December as per the School Education Department’s standard annual schedule.

The reopening comes at a time when weather conditions in the higher reaches of the Valley have shown marked improvement, with clearer skies and rising temperatures signaling the onset of spring. Heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures had kept institutions shuttered, a routine measure to ensure safety during the harsh Himalayan winter. However, this year’s break was prolonged by additional factors, including temporary closures ordered as a precautionary step amid sporadic protests that erupted following reports of the killing of Ali Khamenei—son of Iran’s Supreme Leader—in what were described as alleged joint US-Israeli strikes.

Education Minister Sakina Itoo announced the decision to resume classes on Sunday, emphasizing a thorough review of the ground situation. “After assessing the prevailing conditions across all districts of Kashmir, we have decided to reopen educational institutions from Monday,” she stated, underscoring the government’s commitment to minimizing academic disruptions while prioritizing student safety.

The protests, which flared up in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, had prompted authorities to extend the winter break slightly beyond the usual timeline. These demonstrations were linked to regional tensions stemming from escalating West Asia conflicts, including recent accusations against Iran for attacks in UAE and Bahrain, alongside Israeli strikes blanketing Tehran in smoke—as reported in today’s headlines. With the situation now stabilizing, officials expressed confidence that regular academic activities could proceed without further hitches.

Parents and teachers welcomed the development with cautious optimism. “It’s a relief to see the children back in school; the winter break was longer than expected, but now we hope for a smooth academic session,” said one parent from Srinagar’s upscale Rawalpora area. Teachers echoed similar sentiments, preparing classrooms and lesson plans to catch up on the syllabus. The reopening also aligns with preparations for upcoming exams, including the extended NEET-UG application deadline, signaling a broader push to restore educational momentum in the region.

This annual ritual of school reopenings holds particular significance in Kashmir, where winters often disrupt daily life and education. The Valley’s schools, serving thousands of students from primary to higher secondary levels, play a vital role in fostering learning amid challenging terrain and weather. Government and private institutions alike geared up for the day, with directives issued to ensure compliance with safety protocols, including snow clearance on approach roads and heating arrangements in classrooms.

As the Valley transitions back to routine, the education department has urged parents to encourage punctual attendance and monitor their children’s adjustment to post-vacation schedules. With broader national developments like India’s triumphant 3rd T20 World Cup win and J&K’s youth aspirational surge under Modi government initiatives, the focus now shifts to building on this fresh start for the academic year
