Srinagar, Nov 08: The Crime Branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police has arrested a man accused of duping a job aspirant of ₹4.20 lakh on the false promise of securing a government post, officials said on Saturday.
The accused, identified as Fayz Ahmed, a resident of Chadoora in Budgam district, had been absconding since 2023 after a case was registered against him in Jammu. A police spokesperson said that Ahmed was tracked down and arrested in Jammu on Friday following a three-month-long pursuit by a special team.
Police said Ahmed had taken money from a complainant, Javaid Iqbal of Poonch, promising him a position as a panchayat accountant. When the job failed to materialize, Iqbal approached the authorities, leading to the registration of a cheating case.
Investigations revealed that two other cases had already been registered against Ahmed with the Crime Branch in 2022, officials added.
Following his arrest, the accused was produced before the court of the Sub-Judge, Poonch, and has since been remanded to judicial custody.
Police sources said that Ahmed was chargesheeted before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Poonch, on October 28, and efforts are underway to trace his involvement in other similar frauds.
The Crime Branch urged citizens to remain cautious against fraudulent job offers and to verify recruitment claims through official channels before making any monetary transactions.
