Jammu, Oct 06: The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has stepped up efforts to strengthen sanitation and waste management across the city, with Joint Commissioner (Health & Sanitation) Abdul Star chairing a comprehensive review meeting on Sunday. The session focused on assessing cleanliness operations, public hygiene, and the enforcement of the Single Use Plastic (SUP) ban across all wards.
Reviewing the overall sanitation setup, Star emphasized strict monitoring of door-to-door garbage collection vehicles through GPS to ensure timely coverage and efficient waste disposal. He directed officials to curb unauthorized dumping of construction and demolition (C&D) waste along roads and vacant plots, warning that violators would face firm action.
Taking stock of SUP enforcement, the Joint Commissioner instructed field staff to intensify drives and impose penalties as per rules. He also reviewed the condition of public toilets, directing teams to maintain regular cleaning schedules, ensure water availability, and keep facilities functional at all times.
Star highlighted the importance of swift grievance redressal through the Swachh City Portal, instructing officers to resolve complaints within deadlines to maintain public trust. He called for strict attendance tracking of sanitation workers and better beat-wise deployment to achieve full area coverage.
The functioning of garbage transportation vehicles, including 407 and 709 tippers, was reviewed to improve coordination and fuel efficiency. The Joint Commissioner also directed the Nallah Gang to carry out regular desilting of drains to prevent waterlogging during rains.
Focusing on sustainability, Star inspected composting activities at Narwal and urged officials to promote organic waste conversion and eco-friendly disposal of garden waste. He stressed on minimizing the city’s waste load through recycling and reuse.
Revenue collection and enforcement against littering, waste burning, and plastic misuse were also discussed, with directions to enhance recovery mechanisms and maintain transparency.
Concluding the meeting, Star urged sanitation teams to ensure strict field supervision and engage with residents and market bodies to foster collective responsibility for cleanliness. “Public participation is essential to sustain a cleaner, greener Jammu,” he said.
Health Officer Dr. Vinod Sharma, Sanitation Officers, and Inspectors from all wards attended the meeting and reaffirmed their commitment to executing the directives effectively.
