SRINAGAR, JUNE 29: Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered an FIR and launched an investigation into the circulation of fake news on social media falsely claiming that terrorists attacked a police station in Baramulla, opened fire on government offices, and that the Chief Minister had proposed cancelling the annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra.
Police Baramulla categorically denied the claims, describing them as “completely false, baseless and devoid of any factual basis.” Officials confirmed that no terrorist attack or firing incident had taken place anywhere in Baramulla and that reports regarding the cancellation of the Amarnath Yatra were entirely fabricated.
According to the police, the deliberate spread of such misinformation appears to be a calculated attempt to create fear, spread panic, disturb public tranquillity, and undermine public confidence ahead of the annual pilgrimage.
An FIR has been registered, and an investigation is underway to identify those responsible for creating, publishing, and circulating the fake content. Police warned that strict legal action will be taken against all individuals involved, including those who knowingly share or forward the false information to amplify the misinformation.
The 57-day Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra is scheduled to commence on July 3 and conclude on August 28.
Police have urged the public not to share unverified information on social media, warning that the circulation of fake news not only creates unnecessary panic and disrupts public order but also attracts penal consequences under the law. Citizens have been advised to rely only on official government and police channels for authentic updates.
