JAMMU, Dec 26: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has issued firm directions to all government departments, institutions, local bodies and government residential colonies to fast-track the installation of prepaid smart electricity meters under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).
The move aims to strengthen the financial health of power distribution utilities while ensuring a reliable and uninterrupted 24×7 electricity supply across the Union Territory. Officials said the prepaid smart metering initiative is a key reform designed to bring greater transparency, efficiency and accountability in power consumption and billing.
Under the RDSS framework, prepaid smart meters will enable real-time monitoring of electricity usage, reduce transmission and distribution losses, and help curb power theft. The system will also empower consumers by allowing them to track their consumption, manage usage efficiently and avoid unexpected billing issues.
The government has emphasized that all concerned departments must ensure timely implementation of the directive, with close monitoring of progress at every level. The installation of smart meters in government establishments is expected to set an example for wider adoption across the UT and contribute to sustainable power management.
Officials further noted that improved revenue realization through prepaid metering will help reinvest funds into strengthening infrastructure, upgrading grids and enhancing overall service delivery, ultimately benefiting consumers with improved power reliability and quality.
