JAMMU, JUNE 2 : Northern Railway’s Jammu Division collected more than Rs 66.50 lakh during a special ticket-checking drive conducted across its jurisdiction in May 2026 to curb ticketless travel and safeguard railway revenue.
According to official figures available up to May 31, railway authorities registered 12,693 cases involving passengers travelling without valid tickets or committing other ticketing irregularities during the month-long enforcement campaign. The drive generated revenue of Rs 66,50,165.
Railway officials said intensive inspections were carried out by ticket-checking staff at stations, on platforms and aboard trains. Penalties were imposed on passengers travelling without tickets, without valid passes, on platforms without platform tickets, and those found violating ticketing rules.
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu Division, Uchit Singhal, said ticketless travel causes significant revenue losses to the Railways and creates inconvenience for genuine passengers. He noted that the practice often results in unauthorized occupation of seats, overcrowding and security concerns.
Singhal said special checking squads are regularly deployed to tackle the issue. He added that the objective of such drives is not only to recover penalties but also to spread awareness about the importance of travelling with valid tickets.
He urged passengers to obtain valid tickets before commencing their journeys through computerized reservation centres, ticket counters, the UTS mobile application or the IRCTC platform. He also advised visitors coming to railway stations to receive or see off passengers to purchase platform tickets.
Warning against violations, Singhal said passengers travelling without valid tickets are liable to penalties and legal action under Sections 137 and 138 of the Railways Act, 1989.
The Jammu Division of Northern Railway said similar enforcement drives will continue in the future to ensure transparency in railway operations and provide better facilities to bona fide passengers.
