Jammu, Jul 17: Jammu has secured the top position as the cleanest city in Jammu and Kashmir under Swachh Survekshan 2024, according to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India. The rankings were based on a nationwide cleanliness survey conducted in April and May 2025.
Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) not only topped the UT-level urban rankings but also received the prestigious 3-Star Garbage-Free City (GFC) certification. Additionally, it was honoured with the ‘Promising Swachh Shehar’ award in recognition of its strong performance in sanitation, citizen involvement, and solid waste management.
Dr. Devansh Yadav (IAS), Managing Director of Swachh Bharat Mission and Commissioner of JMC, received the awards at a felicitation ceremony held in New Delhi.
The Swachh Survekshan 2024 is India’s largest annual cleanliness assessment, evaluating urban local bodies (ULBs) on waste management practices, sanitation infrastructure, cleanliness levels, and public feedback.
Further reinforcing J&K’s progress in urban sanitation, Beerwah Municipal Committee earned a 1-Star GFC rating. Seventy ULBs achieved Open Defecation Free Plus (ODF+) status, while two attained the higher ODF++ certification.
These achievements reflect a growing focus on clean cities, public awareness, and effective implementation of the Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban 2.0, spearheaded in Jammu and Kashmir by Commissioner Secretary Mandeep Kaur (IAS). Her leadership has driven notable improvements in hygiene, solid waste management, and civic participation across the Union Territory.
Officials emphasized that the success is a result of collaborative efforts by the government, municipal bodies, and citizens. A department spokesperson remarked, “Jammu’s performance showcases our collective dedication to building cleaner, healthier, and sustainable cities.”
J&K’s performance in Swachh Survekshan 2024 marks a strong step forward in its journey toward better urban living and environmental responsibility.
