Leh, Sept 29: The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) today inaugurated the Himalayan Study Tour in Ladakh, an initiative aimed at familiarising civil servants with life in border regions and the role of security forces in frontier duties. The programme was formally inaugurated by Dr Akun Sabharwal, Inspector General, North-West Frontier ITBP.
A total of 106 civil servants joined the tour, which began with a ceremonial welcome. In his inaugural address, Dr Sabharwal highlighted the significance of the initiative, noting that such programmes provide valuable insights into the challenges of high-altitude deployment and the resilience of ITBP personnel, popularly known as Himveers.
The participants were briefed on the diverse responsibilities of ITBP—from securing the Himalayan frontiers and conducting disaster relief operations to fostering community development in remote villages. They also witnessed demonstrations that showcased the courage, discipline, and unity of the force.
Emphasising the importance of the tour, Dr Sabharwal said, “The Himalayan Study Tour is not just an exposure visit; it is an opportunity for young civil servants to understand the realities of border life, the hardships faced in extreme altitudes, and the spirit of service that drives our Himveers.”
The civil servants also interacted with locals, gaining a deeper understanding of the cultural vibrancy of Ladakh and the close bond between border residents and ITBP troops. Officials noted that the initiative will help nurture greater synergy between administrative services and security forces, strengthening governance and national integration in remote areas.
The Himalayan Study Tour will continue over the coming days with field visits, cultural exchanges, and interactive sessions designed to leave participants with a holistic perspective of life in India’s border regions.
