NEW DELHI, May 8: India has successfully carried out the first flight trial of an indigenously developed glide weapon system off the coast of Odisha.
The Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) system, designed to convert unguided warheads into precision-guided weapons, was tested on Thursday, according to the Defence Ministry.
The ministry stated that the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) jointly conducted the maiden trial of the TARA weapon system off the Odisha coast.
It said TARA is India’s first indigenous glide weapon system that enhances the accuracy of unguided warheads, enabling them to strike ground targets with precision. The system has been developed by the Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad, along with other DRDO laboratories, to improve the effectiveness of low-cost weapons.
The ministry added that it is the first glide weapon of its kind to use state-of-the-art, cost-effective technologies.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the IAF, and industry partners involved in the project, calling the trial a significant step in strengthening India’s indigenous defence capabilities.
