Hyderabad, Jun 23: Congress, Left parties and TJS on Tuesday took out a rally here protesting what they described “undemocratic and vote-theft” activities allegedly being carried out through the SIR of electoral rolls by the BJP and Election Commission.
Holding placards, the protesters participated in the rally which was organised from BR Ambedkar statue on Tank Bund to BRK Bhavan.
Congress MP from Nagarkurnool Mallu Ravi accused the BJP government at the Centre of “conspiring to deprive citizens” of their constitutional right to vote under the guise of ‘SIR’.
The Congress party would vehemently oppose any move that undermines the right to vote, which serves as the foundation of the country’s democracy, he said.
“The BJP government is trampling upon the people’s right to life and democratic rights by using the electoral system for political gain,” he claimed.
Subsequently, the protesters submitted a memorandum to the Telangana State Election Commission officials, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the SIR process and full protection for the people’s right to vote.
CPI MLA Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao, MLC M Kodandaram were among those who participated in the rally.
House-to-house enumeration process under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls would be taken up in Telangana from June 25 to July 24.
Election Commission officials said the primary objective of SIR is purification of electoral rolls and to see to it that all the eligible citizens are included in electoral rolls.
