Leh, Apr 27 : A large-scale plantation drive was carried out at HSS Thiksay, bringing together school authorities, community representatives and students in a coordinated effort to promote environmental stewardship at the institution’s upcoming campus.
The initiative, organised in collaboration with local Namabardar, parents and the School Management and Development Committee (SMDC), took place on a 72-kanal land parcel earmarked for the new school complex. The land had been donated in 2010 by Lamzang Tsogspa Thiksay under the guidance of Thiksay Rinpoche, marking a long-standing community investment in education infrastructure.
School authorities said the plantation effort was aimed at integrating ecological planning with campus development, as construction of the new building continues. A variety of saplings—including Salix babylonica, Ulmus wallichiana and Thiya sinensis—were planted to improve green cover and ecological balance.
Support for the drive came from Directorate of Sowa Rigpa Ladakh, which supplied the saplings. The school administration acknowledged the contribution as crucial in executing the plantation programme.
Community participation remained a defining feature of the event. SMDC members assisted in logistics, while former member Dorjay Namgail contributed funds for student refreshments. Nearby residents, including Azang Tsering and associates, extended hospitality by serving tea to staff members, reflecting close ties between the institution and its neighbourhood.
Students turned out in large numbers, taking part in the plantation with visible enthusiasm. Their involvement, officials noted, added momentum to the campaign and reinforced awareness about environmental responsibility among young learners.
The school administration described the drive as part of a broader vision to develop a sustainable campus while strengthening community engagement. The initiative is expected to contribute not only to the physical landscape of the new school premises but also to long-term ecological awareness in the region.
