Kharu, Apr 27 : A veterinary health camp organised by the 26 Mobile Field Veterinary Hospital at Kharu drew an encouraging turnout on Sunday, with 84 pets examined, vaccinated, and dewormed, as part of activities marking World Veterinary Day 2026.
The initiative, conducted in Leh, catered to both military personnel and civilians, underlining a growing awareness of animal healthcare and its link to public safety. Veterinary officials reported that the camp was executed with streamlined case management, adherence to hygiene standards, and proper animal handling protocols.
Alongside clinical services, the veterinary team emphasised preventive care, advising pet owners on balanced nutrition, routine check-ups, and the importance of timely vaccinations, particularly against rabies—a persistent public health concern in many regions.
Officials said the outreach aimed not only at improving animal welfare but also at curbing zoonotic diseases, reinforcing the connection between veterinary services and community health. The inclusive approach ensured access to services across sections of society, further strengthening civilian-military cooperation in the region.
In a parallel initiative, a rabies awareness lecture was conducted at Sakti village, where 75 students and 21 teachers from the Government Higher Secondary School participated. The session focused on transmission risks, early symptoms, and immediate first aid following animal bites, with particular emphasis on post-exposure prophylaxis.
The interactive format, supported by visual aids and practical examples, enabled participants to grasp critical aspects of rabies prevention and response, officials noted.
The dual outreach—combining direct veterinary care with educational engagement—was seen as a step towards fostering responsible pet ownership and enhancing grassroots awareness on animal-borne diseases in the region.
Authorities indicated that such programmes are expected to continue, given their role in promoting safer and healthier communities across Ladakh.
