Mymensingh, Bangladesh (Feb 10): A 62-year-old Hindu trader, Susen Chandra Sarkar, was hacked to death inside his rice shop in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district late Monday night—just two days before parliamentary elections.
The attack occurred around 11 PM at Bhai Bhai Enterprise in Bogar Bazar, Trishal upazila. Unknown assailants used sharp weapons, left Sarkar bleeding, shut the shop, and fled. Family members found him after searching; he was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital but declared dead on arrival.
Victim’s son Sujan Sarkar said: “We’ve run this rice business for years. No enmity with anyone. They killed my father brutally and stole several lakh taka from the shop.” Police have registered a case; no arrests yet. Post-mortem underway.
The killing heightens fears for Bangladesh’s Hindu minority (8% population) amid rising attacks ahead of February 12 polls—the first since Sheikh Hasina’s ouster. Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council reported 51 incidents in December 2025 alone, including murders and arson. Recent cases: a Hindu burnt alive in Narsingdi; petrol pump worker killed in Rajbari.
