Jammu, Nov 11: A 27-year-old man, described by police as a hardcore criminal recently released from jail, was brutally attacked by unidentified assailants in the Miran Sahib area on the outskirts of Jammu during the intervening night of November 10 and 11, leaving him grievously injured and without one hand.
According to police, the victim, identified as Kulbir Bhagat alias Rinku, a resident of Langotian village, was targeted by a group of assailants armed with sharp-edged weapons. “He was found in a pool of blood, with one of his hands severed. He was rushed to the Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital for treatment,” a police spokesperson said.
Investigators suspect the attack to be the result of a rival gang feud, citing preliminary findings that indicate the involvement of members from an opposing group. A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team was called to the scene to collect evidence, including blood samples and weapon traces.
Police records show that Rinku had been detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA) in 2024 for his involvement in several criminal cases and was released only a few months ago. Authorities said he was wanted in multiple assault cases, including two registered at the R S Pura police station and one at Arnia police station.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the law, and efforts are on to identify and arrest the attackers, police added.
Law enforcement officials are also examining whether the assault was a revenge strike linked to previous gang hostilities in the region. Further investigation is underway.
