Leh, Aug 02: A dedicated group of 12 volunteers from across India has embarked on a transformative mission in some of the most remote regions of Ladakh, delivering educational support and social awareness in a terrain known more for its isolation than accessibility.
Operating under the Himalayan Volunteer Tourism (HVT) Foundation, the team has extended their reach to over 67 government schools, working alongside local teachers to improve classroom delivery and offering one-on-one attention to slow learners. Their work included storytelling sessions and career counselling, aiming to spark imagination and provide direction to children with limited exposure beyond the high-altitude hamlets they call home.
In tandem with their educational outreach, the volunteers launched Project Warmth, distributing winter jackets and heaters valued at ₹50 lakh — a lifeline in the bone-chilling temperatures of the region. The initiative, made possible by support from Fab Recreate, addressed the pressing need for thermal relief in communities ill-equipped for Ladakh’s harsh winters.
Beyond the classroom and the cold, the team also spearheaded Project Sambhav, a community-driven awareness initiative against drug use. Using compassion as a cornerstone, the campaign sought to counter the silent creep of substance abuse in youth by fostering dialogue and understanding.
Complementing their efforts, a Toy Library was inaugurated in partnership with the Pagaria Foundation, adding a rare recreational element to early childhood development in the region’s underserved areas.
The mission has not gone unnoticed. Kunzes Dolma, Vice President of the Ladakh Buddhist Association and an advisory board member of HVT, lent her consistent guidance and encouragement, proving instrumental to the foundation’s efforts on the ground. Furthermore, the team held discussions with Ladakh’s Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary, deliberating on how government collaboration could amplify efforts in education, homestay training, ecotourism, and public awareness.
Spiritual support also graced the initiative, with blessings from His Holiness lending a deeper sense of purpose to the work being done.
As Ladakh continues to straddle tradition and transition, efforts like those of HVT provide more than just assistance — they offer the possibility of enduring change in the Himalayan frontier.
