Leh, Mar 21: With preparations underway for the forthcoming exposition of sacred Buddha relics in Leh, the Union Territory Administration of Ladakh has initiated a city-wide cleanliness and beautification drive, aiming to present the town in an orderly and welcoming state for the anticipated influx of visitors.
The large-scale initiative has been launched on the directions of Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, reflecting an intensified administrative focus on sanitation, infrastructure upkeep, and environmental improvement ahead of the religious event.
Being carried out in mission mode, the drive brings together multiple government agencies to tackle long-standing concerns such as waste accumulation, roadside debris, and deteriorating urban aesthetics. The administration is working towards ensuring that Leh is clean, organised, and prepared to host visitors during the exposition.
In the first phase, extensive operations are in progress to clear accumulated dust, construction material, and demolition waste from key locations across the town. Areas currently under coverage include Lok Niwas, the Secretariat, Leh Main Market, Jivetsal, and adjoining localities, where dedicated teams have been deployed for systematic cleaning.
Simultaneously, groundwork for plantation has commenced along major roads. Pits are being prepared for large-scale planting to enhance green cover and improve the overall visual environment of the town. Officials stated that the combined focus on sanitation and plantation is intended to ensure both immediate improvement and sustained urban upkeep.
The ongoing drive follows the Lieutenant Governor’s visit to Leh Main Market and Old Leh Town on March 15, during which he reviewed civic conditions and directed authorities to undertake a structured and sustained effort to improve sanitation and city management, particularly in view of upcoming public events.
Officials confirmed that Saxena is closely monitoring the progress of the campaign and has expressed satisfaction with the coordinated response from various departments. He has underscored that maintaining cleanliness is essential not only for the success of major events like the Buddha relics exposition but also for improving the overall quality of life for residents.
Reiterating his broader vision for Ladakh, the Lieutenant Governor called for active participation from citizens, local stakeholders, and visitors in maintaining cleanliness and supporting the administration’s efforts. He emphasised that lasting improvements in civic standards require a collective approach alongside administrative measures.
The administration has urged the public to cooperate with the ongoing drive, stating that the initiative forms part of a wider effort to improve urban conditions and reinforce Leh’s standing as a preferred destination for both pilgrims and tourists.
