NEW DELHI, OCT 19: Customs officials seized gold rods weighing 3.2 kilograms and valued at approximately Rs 4.03 crore from an Indian passenger arriving from Dubai at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, according to an official statement issued on Monday.
The passenger, who arrived on October 19, was intercepted by Customs officers following spot profiling, the statement said.
During a detailed examination of his baggage, officials recovered the gold rods concealed inside a floor spring, a mechanical device generally installed beneath the floor near a door to control its opening and closing.
According to officials, the unusual concealment method was allegedly used to evade detection and smuggle the gold into India.
Following the recovery, Customs authorities registered a case under the Customs Act, 1962. Further investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the attempted smuggling and determine whether others were involved.
The seizure highlights the continued vigilance of Customs officials at major international airports to detect and prevent gold smuggling through concealed methods.
Officials have not disclosed further details about the passenger or whether any additional arrests have been made in connection with the case.
