Kargil, Oct 03: The Government Degree College (GDC) Kargil, Sankoo Campus, marked the 156th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi with a series of commemorative events over two days, reflecting on the life, philosophy, and enduring legacy of the Father of the Nation.
The celebrations began on October 1, 2025, with the Department of History organizing a debate and discussion under the guidance of Dr. Fayaz Hussain, Head of the Department. Dr. Hussain highlighted Gandhi’s enduring ideals of non-violence, truth, and social harmony, underscoring their continued relevance in addressing contemporary societal challenges and fostering peaceful coexistence.
Dr. Stanzin Yangdol elaborated on Gandhi’s pivotal contributions to India’s freedom struggle, his constructive programmes, and his unwavering commitment to self-reliance and rural development. The student-led debate encouraged vibrant intellectual engagement, promoting critical thinking and democratic discourse among participants.
Continuing the observance, the Department of Political Science hosted a commemorative programme on October 3, 2025. Dr. Gulzar Hussain, Head of the Department, opened the event with remarks on the significance of Gandhi Jayanti in the present socio-political climate.
Prof. Saleem Ahmad, Nodal Officer, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing Gandhi’s lifelong dedication to peace, harmony, and India’s independence through non-violent means. Dr. Mohd Sharif highlighted Gandhi’s major works and their relevance in contemporary society.
Students also played a central role in the programme. Ms. Leela Banoo, a third-semester student, spoke on the continued relevance of Gandhi’s principles, while first-semester student Ms. Suraya Banoo reflected on the philosophy of non-violence and its importance in today’s world.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Ali Asgar (3rd Semester), expressing gratitude to the Principal, faculty members, and students for their contributions to the success of the celebration.
The two-day observance at GDC Kargil, Sankoo Campus not only paid tribute to the Father of the Nation but also provided a platform for students and faculty to engage with Gandhi’s teachings in a meaningful and contemporary context.
