NEW DELHI, APR 17: Tycoon Gautam Adani has surpassed fellow Gujarati industrialist Mukesh Ambani to reclaim the title of Asia’s richest person, driven by a sustained rally in shares across his ports-to-energy conglomerate.
With a net worth of $92.6 billion, Adani now leads Ambani, whose fortune stands at $90.8 billion, according to the latest billionaire rankings. Adani, founder of the Adani Group, operates India’s largest private seaport network, is the country’s top renewable energy producer and private airport operator, and ranks among the world’s biggest coal traders. He currently holds the No. 19 spot on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
Adani’s wealth stems mainly from shareholdings across 10 listed group companies. A recent surge in Adani Group stocks has added billions in market value, reflecting strong investor confidence in India’s economic growth and energy transition. In contrast, Ambani’s Reliance Industries—spanning energy, telecom, and retail—has seen more modest gains, triggering a reshuffle in regional billionaire rankings.
Globally, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk tops the list with $656 billion, more than double Alphabet co-founder Larry Page ($286 billion). Amazon founder Jeff Bezos ranks third at $269 billion. Adani and Ambani remain the only Indians in the top 50.
Ambani held India’s richest title for over a decade until Adani’s stock surge catapulted him ahead in February 2022. After Hindenburg Research’s short-seller report triggered a $100 billion market cap crash for Adani Group, Ambani reclaimed the top spot. Adani overtook him again in mid-2024 amid infrastructure expansion and green energy momentum, lost it in mid-2025, and has now regained it this month.
The Adani Group’s diversified portfolio covers transport, logistics, integrated energy infrastructure, natural resources, airports, defence, aerospace, data centres, cement, media, roads, rail, metro, real estate, urban redevelopment, food, FMCG, and digital platforms. The group notes Adani is India’s first first-generation entrepreneur to lead a business empire exceeding $200 billion in market cap.
