Kargil, Mar 31: Fresh avalanches and continuous snow accumulation disrupted movement along the strategic Zojila Pass on Tuesday, forcing authorities to suspend vehicular traffic and issue a complete closure of the route for the day.
Officials from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) confirmed that multiple avalanches struck different stretches of the Zojila axis, particularly near Pathari, rendering several portions of the highway unsafe. Aerial drone imagery from the affected sector showed large volumes of snow and debris covering the roadway, with fresh slides reported during the day.
“Zojila Road remains closed for traffic today due to heavy snow accumulation, avalanches, landslides, and falling stones at several locations,” an official stated, adding that the situation remains unstable with chances of further avalanches.
Talking to ‘The Earth News’, a BRO official under Project Vijayak said, “Restoration work on the highway is ongoing, and our teams are actively engaged in snow clearance and road maintenance wherever conditions permit. However, operations are being temporarily hampered at specific locations where fresh avalanches have occurred. We are closely monitoring the situation and will expedite full clearance once those stretches are secured.”
Authorities raised a red signal for vehicular movement, citing risks to commuter safety and ongoing instability along the mountain corridor. Despite continued efforts, complete restoration could not be achieved due to repeated disruptions caused by fresh avalanche activity.
Meanwhile, traffic movement was halted at the Sonamarg Traffic Control Point, where vehicles heading towards Zojila were stopped and directed to return. Officials confirmed that no vehicles are being allowed beyond this point until further orders.
The precautionary measure was taken in view of prevailing weather conditions and repeated avalanche activity in the Zojila sector. Commuters were advised to defer travel plans on this route until authorities issue clearance after assessing ground conditions.
Travelers have also been urged to follow official traffic advisories and updates before undertaking journeys in high-altitude areas, where weather patterns continue to pose challenges to connectivity.
Zojila Pass, a vital link between Kashmir and Ladakh, frequently witnesses disruptions during winter months due to heavy snowfall and avalanche threats, impacting civilian and supply movement across the region.
