Leh, Mar 24: Former Member of Parliament Jamyang Tsering Namgyal on Monday called for expanding ecological restoration efforts across Ladakh and increasing forest cover to five per cent, as he participated in the launch of the Indus River Green Corridor Initiative in Leh.
Speaking during the plantation drive along the Indus River, Namgyal emphasised that Ladakh’s forest cover remains below one per cent and requires sustained intervention through coordinated institutional support and public participation. He expressed confidence that consistent efforts could help the region move towards improved environmental resilience.
The initiative was launched by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on the banks of the Indus, bringing together civil administration, armed forces, police, and local communities. The programme began with the plantation of 1,000 indigenous trees aimed at restoring the fragile riverbank ecosystem.
Highlighting the importance of community involvement, Namgyal noted the participation of the monastic fraternity from Spituk Gonpa, alongside officials and residents, as a reflection of collective responsibility towards environmental conservation.
In a parallel effort, 1,000 saplings of apricot and cherry blossom were planted along roads in Leh town. The plantation drive is expected to enhance green cover while contributing to the visual landscape and ecological balance of the urban area.
Namgyal observed that such initiatives could contribute to the development of eco-cultural tourism while addressing environmental concerns in high-altitude regions. He added that with continuity and wider implementation, the initiative could serve as a model for similar ecological efforts.
The Indus River Green Corridor Initiative is expected to be carried forward in phases, with authorities planning further plantation and conservation measures along the river and adjoining areas in the coming months.
