Leh, Feb 26: In a focused outreach to strengthen orchard management practices in Nubra, the Department of Horticulture, Leh on Thursday conducted a one-day Farmers’ Training Programme across Kuri, Murgi and Trisha villages.
Organised through Horticulture Zone Nubra on February 25, the programme centred on pruning, training and orchard sanitation, drawing active participation from local farmers and orchardists. The initiative was aimed at improving technical understanding and equipping growers with practical skills suited to the agro-climatic conditions of the region.
During the session, Horticulture Technician Shri Hamid Ullah, along with field staff of the department, delivered detailed lectures and carried out on-site demonstrations. Farmers were guided on scientific pruning techniques, canopy management, and systematic removal of diseased and dead wood. Special attention was given to sanitation practices designed to check the spread of pests and diseases.
Officials underlined the need for timely orchard operations to improve fruit quality and enhance yield. Demonstrations in the field allowed participants to observe recommended practices and seek clarifications directly from technical staff.
The training forms part of the department’s ongoing efforts to promote modern and scientific orchard management across Nubra. By encouraging improved cultivation techniques and preventive plant care, the department aims to reduce crop losses and raise the income of orchardists in the region.
Local participants expressed appreciation for the practical exposure, noting that such field-based programmes help bridge the gap between traditional methods and scientific approaches tailored to local conditions.
