JAMMU DEC 11: The Jammu and Kashmir Government’s high-profile initiative to draft a full-fledged Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy, launched in October 2022 to boost clean mobility and curb pollution, remains unfinished despite repeated official emphasis on the need for a clear EV roadmap.
Through an order issued on October 20, 2022, the administration constituted a committee of Administrative Secretaries from Housing and Urban Development, Industries and Commerce, Power Development, Transport, Law, along with the Director General (Budget). The move was intended to lay the groundwork for a structured transition to electric mobility across the Union Territory, particularly in Jammu and Srinagar.
The panel was tasked with recommending steps to build an electric mobility ecosystem, including incentives for buying EVs and converting existing commercial fleets to electric. It was also asked to outline charging and related infrastructure needs, study comparable policies in neighbouring States, examine road safety issues linked to EVs, and propose measures to foster research, innovation, and skill development in the sector.
