Leh, Apr 23 : Delhi Public School (DPS) Leh observed Earth Day on Wednesday with a series of student-led initiatives aimed at promoting environmental awareness, sustainable practices and community engagement across the town.
The programme, held under the guidance of Director Major General Mohinder Sagoch (Retd.), featured activities including a cleanliness drive, awareness outreach to government offices and participation in a national-level webinar on environmental conservation. School authorities said the initiative was designed to build responsibility among students towards maintaining a cleaner and greener Ladakh.
Students took part in creative and academic engagements such as pebble art and a quiz competition organised within the school campus. In addition, they attended a live national webinar on Earth Day 2026, conducted as per directions from the Directorate of School Education, UT Ladakh, where they were introduced to contemporary environmental challenges and sustainable solutions.
A major highlight of the observance was a cleanliness drive carried out by students in and around Leh. The exercise sought to encourage civic responsibility while reinforcing the importance of public participation in maintaining environmental hygiene.
Extending their outreach beyond the campus, students visited several government offices, including those of Additional Deputy Commissioner Mukul Beniwal (IAS), Chief Education Officer Deldan Angmo, the Commandant of ITBP, and Administrative Secretary Shashanka Ala (IAS). Acting as ambassadors for environmental awareness, they presented saplings and engaged officials in discussions on conservation efforts.
Officials commended the initiative and encouraged the students to continue contributing towards environmental protection. During the visits, students articulated their ideas on sustainability and pledged their commitment to a greener future for the region.
Principal Sonal Mediratta, who actively participated in the activities, emphasised the need for adopting environmentally responsible lifestyles. She urged students to translate awareness into action through everyday practices.
School authorities described the Earth Day programme as an enriching exercise that not only deepened students’ understanding of environmental issues but also strengthened their role as responsible citizens committed to safeguarding the fragile ecosystem of Ladakh.
