Leh, May 15 : Representatives and stakeholders from Durbuk Sub-Division on Thursday demanded the appointment of a separate Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) for the region, contending that the creation of the new Changthang district with Nyoma as headquarters has increased administrative difficulties for residents instead of improving governance accessibility.
Addressing a press conference in Leh, representatives from various sections of Durbuk, including members of Chushul Monastery, former Executive Councillors, former councillors and political representatives, welcomed the Government of India’s decision to create five new districts in Ladakh. However, they expressed concern that the new administrative arrangement has effectively pushed governance farther away from the people of Durbuk.
The stakeholders stated that residents now have to travel nearly 170 to 180 kilometres to reach Nyoma for official work, compared to the earlier administrative setup which they described as comparatively manageable.
“We were told governance would come closer to the people, but for Durbuk it has moved farther away,” representatives said during the interaction.
According to the delegation, several meetings have been held over the past 10 to 12 days to discuss the issue, and a committee has also been constituted to pursue the demand with political leaders and the administration.
They informed that delegations from Durbuk have met senior BJP leaders, former Chief Executive Councillors and the BJP State President regarding the matter. The issue was also raised before Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan during his recent visit to Ladakh and separately brought to the notice of the Lieutenant Governor.
The stakeholders maintained that the appointment of a dedicated ADC for Durbuk would ease administrative hardships and reduce the need for long-distance travel even for routine official matters.
They further pointed out that residents of Durbuk remain closely connected with Leh in sectors such as healthcare and education, where most institutional facilities and support systems are concentrated. The representatives urged the UT Administration and the Government of India to consider their demand in the interest of administrative convenience and improved public service delivery in the strategically important region.
