Two-Day Child Rights Programme Launched in Leh

Leh, Sept 09: Emphasizing the importance of the mission and adoption procedures, Director of the Social & Tribal Welfare Department, Kunzes Angmo, inaugurated a two-day Training-cum-Sensitisation Programme on Child Rights, Care, and Protection of Children at the Conference Hall, DC Office, Leh. Addressing the participants, she urged social workers and functionaries to clarify doubts, spread awareness, and take every precaution to prevent complications in the future, while encouraging them to derive maximum benefit from the training.

The programme, organised for functionaries of Mission Vatsalaya and child helplines on 8th and 9th September, is being conducted by the Savitribai Phule National Institute of Women and Child Development, with support from the Social & Tribal Welfare Department and the UT Child Protection Society, Ladakh.

Sessions are being led by Sonali Kumari, Assistant Director, National Institute of Cooperation and Child Development, Regional Centre, Mohali, who highlighted the role of training in promoting the holistic development of children. She stressed cross-learning, capacity building, and strengthening awareness of the Juvenile Justice Act, POCSO Act, adoption procedures, and other child protection mechanisms. Ms. Kumari emphasized the need for all functionaries to be well-versed in their responsibilities while handling sensitive situations and to be trained in effective communication with children.

The programme aims to bridge gaps in the implementation of child protection laws and equip social workers and field functionaries to support children in vulnerable circumstances. A similar training is scheduled to take place in Kargil next year.

Participants include Abdul Rahim, Program Manager, State Child Protection Society (SCPS); Sonam Chosdon, Program Manager, State Adoption Resource Agency (SARA); Chairpersons of Child Welfare Committees (CWC) Leh and Kargil; members of the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) Leh and Kargil; social workers; officials from the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU); Child Helpline functionaries; and legal advisors.

The programme commenced with detailed sessions on child protection rights, the POCSO Act, and the Juvenile Justice Act, marking the start of an intensive capacity-building exercise for stakeholders engaged in child welfare across Ladakh.
