PADUM: Concern over the reported inflow of narcotic substances from outside the region dominated a high-level meeting on drug abuse awareness convened by the Zanskar administration on Wednesday, with officials and community leaders calling for collective action to protect local youth from the growing menace.

The meeting, chaired by the Deputy Commissioner, Zanskar, was held at Dak Bungalow Padum and brought together representatives of religious, educational and civil society organisations alongside senior officials from the administration and police.

Among those present were the Superintendent of Police, leaders of the Zanskar Buddhist Association and its Youth Wing, representatives of Moin-ul-Islam, the Muslim Association, AMA Choqspa, the Gonpa Association and officials from the education, health and revenue departments.

During deliberations, participants expressed concern that Zanskar’s connectivity with neighbouring regions on multiple sides had increased the possibility of narcotics entering the district. It was observed that certain tourists and labourers arriving from outside states were allegedly involved in the transportation and distribution of drugs among local youth.

Officials described drug abuse as a serious social challenge requiring coordinated intervention from government agencies, educational institutions, community organisations and local residents.

The Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police urged stakeholders to remain vigilant and promptly report any information related to drug trafficking or substance abuse to the concerned authorities. They stressed that community participation would be crucial in preventing the spread of narcotics and ensuring early intervention.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of awareness campaigns and sustained engagement with young people to discourage substance abuse and promote healthier lifestyles.

Participants resolved to strengthen cooperation between institutions and community groups to curb drug-related activities and safeguard the social fabric of Zanskar.
