KHALTSE: Highlighting the growing importance of preventive awareness in combating substance abuse among young people, Deputy Commissioner Sham, Smt. Kunzes Angmo, on Monday urged students to remain vigilant against narcotic substances and become ambassadors of a drug-free society during an awareness programme held at the Residential Hostel, Khaltse.

The outreach programme, organised to sensitise students to the dangers of drug addiction and substance abuse, focused on prevention, early intervention and the role of educational institutions in safeguarding youth from emerging social challenges.

Addressing students, the Deputy Commissioner warned that drug abuse can have far-reaching consequences on physical and mental health, academic achievement and future opportunities. Stressing the importance of informed decision-making, she encouraged students to cultivate positive habits and maintain a healthy lifestyle to safeguard their well-being.

She observed that awareness remains one of the most effective tools in preventing addiction and urged young people to resist peer pressure and remain focused on their educational and personal goals.

The programme was attended by Sub-Divisional Magistrate Khaltse Mohd. Sharif, Block Medical Officer Dr. Jawad Ahmad, Principal Government Higher Secondary School Khaltse Tsewang Paljor, Incharge SHO Skarma Angchuck, Adolescent Health Counsellor Disket Angmo, faculty members and hostel staff.

During the awareness session, speakers highlighted the social, psychological and health-related consequences of substance abuse and emphasised the need for timely counselling, community support and preventive education among adolescents.

Incharge SHO Skarma Angchuck spoke about the role of law enforcement in addressing drug-related offences and encouraged students to remain alert to the risks associated with narcotics. Vice Principal Thinles Angmo and Adolescent Health Counsellor Disket Angmo stressed the importance of awareness, emotional well-being and early intervention in preventing substance dependence among youth.

The programme forms part of ongoing efforts by the district administration and associated departments to strengthen anti-drug awareness campaigns in educational institutions and encourage community participation in addressing the issue.

Following the awareness programme, the Deputy Commissioner conducted an inspection of the boys’ and girls’ hostels to review living conditions and assess the functioning of residential facilities. She examined the meal menu, interacted with students regarding their concerns and requirements, and reviewed arrangements being made for their welfare.

The Deputy Commissioner also inspected the ongoing construction of the new hostel building and took stock of progress on the project, which is expected to enhance accommodation facilities for students in the region.

The programme concluded with students, teachers and hostel staff taking a collective pledge to work towards a drug-free society and to promote awareness about the harmful effects of substance abuse within their communities.
