Kargil, Mar 25: World Tuberculosis Day was observed in Kargil on Tuesday with a public awareness programme organised by the District Health Society at Suru Valley Higher Secondary School, underscoring sustained efforts to tackle tuberculosis through community participation and early detection.
Deputy Commissioner Kargil, Rakesh Kumar, attended the event as Chief Guest, accompanied by senior health officials including Chief Medical Officer Dr. Liyaqat Ali Khan, District Tuberculosis Officer Dr. Mohd Abass, Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Fatima Banoo, District Immunisation Officer Dr. Rabia, and Block Medical Officer Kargil Dr. Jaleel. Representatives from J&K Bank, along with school authorities and students, were also present.
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner highlighted the role of young people in disseminating awareness about tuberculosis and confronting the stigma that often surrounds the disease. He urged students to take responsibility as community messengers, encouraging individuals to seek medical testing at the onset of symptoms. He further noted that screening camps are being conducted across the district as part of ongoing efforts to eliminate tuberculosis.
He acknowledged the contribution of J&K Bank and other supporting agencies for extending assistance to patients through food support and logistical arrangements, and called for continued cooperation in strengthening outreach measures.
District Tuberculosis Officer Dr. Mohd Abass provided an overview of tuberculosis, with particular emphasis on addressing stigma and improving detection. He outlined the framework of the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and the Ni-kshay Mitra initiative, explaining diagnostic procedures and presenting data on case notifications in Kargil over the past five years, along with progress achieved under the programme.
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Liyaqat Ali Khan elaborated on preventive strategies and treatment protocols, stressing the importance of timely intervention and adherence to medication.
As part of the observance, a speech competition was organised for students, drawing active participation. Winners were awarded prizes during the event.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Vice Principal Shazia Zaidi, marking the end of the day’s proceedings focused on strengthening public awareness and reinforcing collective responsibility in tackling tuberculosis.
