Nubra, May 23: Deputy Commissioner Nubra, Mukul Beniwal, IAS, on Friday reviewed the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules (SWMRs) 2026 in the district and directed officials to strengthen sanitation and waste disposal mechanisms, particularly at major tourist destinations.
The Deputy Commissioner conducted inspections of SRMC centres before chairing a review meeting at the DC Office in Diskit to assess waste management measures and sanitation infrastructure across the district.
During the meeting, discussions focused on waste management challenges at prominent tourist locations, including the sand dunes and other high-footfall areas in Nubra Valley. Stressing the need for sustained cleanliness drives, Mukul Beniwal said effective waste management at tourist destinations must remain a priority for the administration and all stakeholders concerned.
He directed departments, local stakeholders and Nambardars to undertake regular inspections of tourist hotspot areas and ensure proper disposal and collection of waste in accordance with the revised SWM Rules.
The Deputy Commissioner also instructed officials to ensure timely deployment of garbage collection vehicles for regular lifting of waste and maintenance of sanitation standards across the region.
Issues related to water and electricity supply at SRMC centres also came up for discussion during the meeting, with directions issued for improving basic facilities required for efficient waste management operations.
Calling for coordinated efforts, Mukul Beniwal urged all departments, community representatives and tourism stakeholders to work collectively towards maintaining cleanliness and improving sanitation infrastructure in the district.
The meeting was attended by SDM Nubra Jigmet Raftan JKAS, officials from PWD, PDD, PHE and LREDA, Block Development Officers, SHO, Nambardars of Diskit and Hunder, besides representatives of camel and hotel associations of Nubra.
