Dr. Devansh Yadav inspects Flood Damage at Gorkha Nagar
Jammu, Oct 08: Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) Commissioner Dr. Devansh Yadav today conducted an on-site assessment of the Gorkha Nagar area following heavy rains and floods that caused extensive damage across the city. The visit focused on the Gorkha Nagar cremation ground, a key facility used by residents of Gorkha Nagar, Bahu Fort, and adjoining localities for performing last rites.
The recent rise in the Tawi River’s water level led to flooding, which damaged the crematorium’s boundary walls and pathways, and deposited significant silt, debris, and garbage, obstructing access for residents. In response, JMC launched immediate clearance operations, deploying JCB machines to remove debris and restore approach roads to the site.
Speaking during the visit, Dr. Yadav highlighted that the Corporation had already initiated temporary repairs at the crematorium to address the immediate needs of the community. He stated that a detailed proposal had been submitted to the government for the release of funds to implement comprehensive flood restoration works across Jammu city. Once the funds are released, pending restoration projects will be executed without delay.
The Commissioner also announced plans for long-term improvements at the crematorium, including the construction of raised platforms and installation of tin sheds to ensure uninterrupted cremation rituals under all weather conditions. Emphasizing the emotional and cultural significance of cremation grounds, he assured that the Corporation would maintain these facilities with dignity and respect.
Dr. Yadav further directed officials to prepare a detailed report on damages and required interventions to facilitate a comprehensive restoration plan once financial assistance is available. He reaffirmed JMC’s commitment to maintaining cleanliness, sanitation, and basic amenities at all public facilities, including cremation grounds, graveyards, and community infrastructure.
Residents and local representatives expressed gratitude for the Commissioner’s prompt action and personal visit, appreciating the Corporation’s efforts to restore a site of cultural and emotional importance. Joint Commissioner (Works) Firdous Ahmed Qazi, Health Officer Dr. Vinod Sharma, and Executive Engineer Bashir Ahmed Kichloo accompanied Dr. Yadav during the inspection.
