Kargil, Apr 10 : Kargil district administration has set in motion an expanded sports calendar under the Khelo India programme, with a focus on widening participation, promoting inclusion, and strengthening grassroots engagement across the region.
The roadmap was discussed at a meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil, Rakesh Kumar, at the NIC Hall on Thursday. Senior district officials, including Additional District Development Commissioner Ghulam Mohammad and Additional Deputy Commissioner Shabir Hussain, along with officers from the Youth Services and Sports, Social Welfare departments, and the Sports Authority of India centre in Kargil, attended the deliberations.
Officials reviewed preparations for the rollout of activities under the national programme, with particular attention to coordination mechanisms and execution at the district level. The Deputy Commissioner underlined the need to extend sporting opportunities to young people across all parts of Kargil, calling for a sustained push to nurture talent at the grassroots.
In a move aimed at inclusion, the administration has decided to organise dedicated tournaments for specially-abled individuals. The Deputy Commissioner directed that such events be integrated into the broader sports calendar to ensure equitable access and participation.
The meeting also addressed logistical arrangements for ongoing and upcoming tournaments. Authorities were instructed to ensure that activities at Biamathang ground continue without disruption. While the semi-final and final matches will be held at the same venue, other fixtures are to be distributed across alternative grounds, including those at Sharjah and Kaksar, as well as additional available locations. School playgrounds, officials said, would also be utilised where necessary to accommodate the schedule.
Attention was also drawn to tournaments under the SPAN scheme, which seeks to promote peace and social cohesion through sports. The Deputy Commissioner emphasised the need to ensure active participation of women and girls in all such events, alongside efforts to diversify the range of disciplines offered. Sports such as boxing and weightlifting are expected to be included, subject to feasibility.
Reiterating the importance of coordination among departments, the Deputy Commissioner called on officials to ensure timely execution of all planned activities, indicating that a collaborative approach would be central to the programme’s rollout in the district.
