New Delhi, October 24: Haryana Police, in coordination with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), is working to expedite the deportation of fugitive gangster Himanshu Bhau from the United States, where he has been detained by authorities and is currently in the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), officials said on Saturday.
Bhau is wanted in India in several cases, including murder and extortion. According to officials, he was initially detained by US authorities for allegedly misrepresenting facts after Haryana Police alerted them that he had left India using a forged surname on his passport.
The Special Task Force (STF) of Haryana Police is coordinating closely with the CBI, India’s nodal agency for Interpol-related matters, to finalise the necessary procedures and facilitate his return to India.
Investigators said Bhau’s alleged criminal activities began when he was 17, when he was accused of attempting to murder a rival. Although arrested, he reportedly escaped from a juvenile correctional facility in Hisar in 2020.
Since then, he has allegedly become involved in several organised criminal activities and emerged as one of Haryana’s most-wanted criminals.
According to investigators, Bhau initially fled India for Portugal using forged documents and subsequently operated his alleged criminal network from abroad. His gang is also said to have close links with groups opposed to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
The gang came under scrutiny in September after it allegedly claimed responsibility on social media for the daylight killing of gym trainer and owner Vijay Kumar in South Delhi’s Aya Nagar area.
Kumar was shot dead on September 14 after reportedly being lured outside, where two motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire. Police said he was the third person killed in an ongoing local family rivalry.
Bhau’s alleged network has also been linked to a high-profile shooting at a Burger King outlet in Rajouri Garden, Delhi, in 2024, in which a 26-year-old man was killed.
Bhau reportedly claimed responsibility for that killing on social media, alleging that the victim was involved in the 2020 murder of one of his associates.
Authorities are continuing efforts to complete the necessary legal and administrative formalities for Bhau’s deportation to India, where he faces multiple criminal cases.
