Leh, May 15 : The Administration of the Union Territory of Ladakh has commenced a three-day training programme for enumerators and supervisors of Tehsil Leh as part of preparatory exercises for Census 2027, with officials placing emphasis on digital data collection, operational coordination and field-level readiness for the nationwide enumeration process.
The training programme, being conducted at the DC Conference Hall in Leh under the aegis of the Office of the Census Charge Officer and Tehsildar Leh, began on May 13 and will continue till May 15 for the first batch of trainees. A second batch is scheduled to undergo training from May 16 to 18.
Supervised by Attaullah Khan, the sessions are aimed at familiarising enumerators and supervisors with the procedural, technical and administrative framework of Census 2027, which officials described as a crucial exercise for demographic assessment and developmental planning.
Field trainers Rahula and Zahir Ahmed conducted detailed presentations on the structure and methodology of the upcoming census operations, including the workflow responsibilities of enumerators and supervisory staff.
During the sessions, participants were informed that Census 2027 would be conducted in two phases, beginning with House Listing and Housing Census activities. Trainers explained the role of census data in shaping welfare policies, administrative planning and socio-economic development initiatives, while also highlighting the historical relevance of census operations as an institutional tool for governance and public policy formulation.
A major component of the training focused on the transition towards digital enumeration through the “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) system, under which field staff will use personal digital devices for data collection and reporting.
Officials elaborated on operational protocols associated with the digital system, including data entry procedures, field verification processes and coordination between enumerators and supervisors to ensure accuracy and consistency during data collection.
The training sessions also covered technical definitions relating to buildings, census houses and households, with trainers using presentations and case studies to familiarise participants with practical field scenarios likely to arise during enumeration exercises.
Officials said the programme forms part of the administration’s broader efforts to strengthen institutional preparedness and ensure smooth implementation of Census 2027 across the region through systematic capacity building and field-level orientation.
