Leh, Mar 27: A 100-day intensified tuberculosis elimination campaign was launched in Leh as Ladakh marked World Tuberculosis Day with renewed focus on early detection, treatment adherence and community participation to curb the disease.

The campaign was formally inaugurated at SNM Hospital Leh by Tushar Anand, Mission Director, National Health Mission Ladakh, who also flagged off a CBNAAT mobile van to strengthen diagnostic outreach across the region.

The programme, organised by the State TB Cell Ladakh in collaboration with SNM Hospital under the National TB Elimination Programme, witnessed participation from senior health officials, medical staff, district TB teams and students.

Addressing the gathering, the Mission Director underscored the need for early detection and timely treatment, stating that collective efforts from healthcare systems and communities remain central to achieving a TB-free Ladakh.

Health authorities reiterated that tuberculosis is both preventable and curable and urged individuals experiencing symptoms such as persistent cough, fever, weight loss or night sweats to undergo screening. Officials stated that free diagnostic and treatment services are available at all government health institutions.

The intensified campaign is aimed at expanding active case finding, improving treatment adherence and enhancing screening among vulnerable groups while also raising awareness on prevention and available services.

Healthcare workers and field staff engaged in TB control activities were acknowledged for their efforts, with awareness messages focusing on stigma reduction, nutrition support and community involvement shared during the event.

Meanwhile, World Tuberculosis Day was also observed at the District Commissioner Conference Hall in Leh, where Mukul Beniwal, Additional Deputy Commissioner Leh, presided over the programme.

The event witnessed participation from health department officials, community health officers and Panchayati Raj Institution members.

In his address, Tashi Thinles, Director Health Services and State Tuberculosis Officer, spoke about ongoing challenges in tackling tuberculosis and emphasised early diagnosis, proper treatment and preventive measures.

A presentation by Dolma Choskit highlighted achievements under TB control initiatives in Leh district, while Manzoor Hussain stressed the importance of coordination between the Health Department and Panchayati Raj Institutions.

In recognition of grassroots efforts, 49 Panchayats in Leh district were awarded TB Mukt Panchayat certifications, including 22 in the bronze category, 11 in silver and 16 in gold.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Yangchan Dolma, as officials later joined the national-level launch of the campaign through a virtual platform, aligning Ladakh’s efforts with the broader national strategy to eliminate tuberculosis.
