Leh, Aug 21: Demonstrating exceptional grit and efficiency, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has restored connectivity on the Manali–Leh Highway (NH-03) after a massive landslide blocked the vital road link at an altitude of 16,000 feet.
The challenging task was accomplished by the 111 Road Construction Company (RCC) of Project Himank within just 36 hours, despite hostile terrain and harsh weather conditions.
The landslide, triggered by recent rains, had left scores of tourists, locals, and truck drivers stranded along the high-altitude stretch. With temperatures plummeting and supplies running low, the situation had turned critical. Rising to the occasion, BRO’s rescue teams immediately reached the spot, cleared debris, and ensured the safe evacuation of the stranded passengers.
According to officials, the landslide had completely cut off the highway, which serves as a lifeline for Ladakh, ferrying essential commodities, fuel, and supplies from Himachal Pradesh. “The scale of the landslide was massive, and the altitude compounded the difficulties. Yet, our engineers and workers toiled round the clock to clear the road and restore traffic,” a BRO spokesperson said.
Stranded tourists and truck drivers expressed gratitude to the BRO for their timely intervention, which not only ensured their safety but also restored the crucial road link before supplies could run critically low in Leh and other forward areas.
The Manali–Leh Highway is not only strategically important for the armed forces but also plays a vital role in sustaining Ladakh’s economy and tourism. Quick restoration of the route by BRO has once again reaffirmed its reputation as the lifeline keepers of Ladakh.
Local authorities and civil administration have lauded BRO for its swift and dedicated effort, noting that such interventions are crucial to keep the remote Himalayan region connected with the rest of the country.
