Manama/Dubai, Feb 28: Bahrain has said the headquarters of the US Navy’s 5th Fleet in the island kingdom has been targeted by a missile attack, according to an Associated Press report.
The Bahraini statement did not immediately provide details on the scale of the strike, whether the missile hit the compound, or if there were any casualties or damage to the facility, which serves as the nerve centre for US naval operations across the Persian Gulf and wider Middle East.
The reported attack comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States, after Israel and the US carried out coordinated strikes on Iranian targets, including near Tehran, raising fears of a broader regional conflict.
US officials have yet to confirm the nature of the incident, but the episode has added to growing concerns that American military bases in the Gulf, particularly the 5th Fleet’s base in Bahrain, could become prime targets in the escalating confrontation.
