Zanskar, Feb 25: The 154 Field Regiment of the Indian Army organised a two-day medical camp in the Zanskar Sub-Division of Kargil district under Operation Sadbhavana, extending specialist healthcare services to remote mountain villages.
The camp was held on February 23 and 24 at Raru village and Stongday, where nearly 425 residents were examined and provided medical treatment. A team of specialist doctors, including ophthalmologists, physicians, gynaecologists and dental surgeons, attended to patients during the outreach programme.
In addition to clinical consultations, blood tests and other essential diagnostic examinations were carried out on-site. Free medicines were also distributed to those in need.
Zanskar, known for its challenging terrain and harsh weather conditions, faces constraints in accessing advanced medical facilities. The Army’s initiative brought specialist healthcare directly to the doorsteps of residents who otherwise travel long distances for treatment.
Villagers turned up in large numbers at both locations, seeking medical advice for a range of ailments. The presence of specialists allowed patients to receive consultations that are rarely available in the region.
Officials said the outreach was conducted as part of Operation Sadbhavana, the Army’s ongoing civic action programme aimed at supporting communities in remote areas. The effort also sought to foster closer ties between the armed forces and local residents while addressing pressing healthcare requirements.
The two-day camp concluded with the assurance of continued support to the people of Zanskar through similar welfare initiatives in the future.
