ANANTNAG, Feb 14: In a significant blow to the burgeoning narcotics trade in south Kashmir, Anantnag Police arrested a suspected drug peddler and seized approximately 5.66 kilograms of ganja-like substance from his possession during a routine patrol on Saturday. The operation underscores the force’s relentless intensified drive against drug trafficking, which has plagued the region amid rising youth addiction and cross-border smuggling attempts.
Acting on vigilance, a police party from Police Post Sangam was conducting routine patrolling near Doonipora, close to Weeta College, when they spotted a suspicious individual exhibiting nervous behavior. Upon interception and thorough search in accordance with legal protocols, officers recovered the massive haul of contraband concealed on the accused. The quantity—roughly 5.66 kg—highlights the scale of local distribution networks feeding addiction in vulnerable areas.
The accused has been identified as Sahil Fayaz Dar, son of Fayaz Ahmad Dar, a resident of KV Pora Marhama in Anantnag district. Preliminary investigations suggest he was actively involved in peddling narcotics, potentially sourcing from illicit channels that exploit the area’s terrain for smuggling. In a formal statement, Anantnag Police affirmed their continued campaign against drug trafficking, noting this as a key success in disrupting supply lines.
Accordingly, a case has been registered as FIR No. 28/2026 under Sections 8/20 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Police Station Bejbehara. The accused has been taken into custody, and a thorough investigation is underway to uncover accomplices, upstream suppliers, and the broader network. Further recoveries or arrests are anticipated as interrogations progress.
This bust comes amid Anantnag Police’s broader commitment to eradicating the drug menace from society, a scourge that has ensnared countless youth, fueling crime, family breakdowns, and health crises across Jammu and Kashmir. The force has ramped up patrols, checkpoints, and community outreach in recent months, leading to multiple seizures.
