Leh, May 02 : Ladakhi social activist Ghulam Mohammad has urged the inclusion of the Noorbakshia community in the Haj Committee of the Union Territory of Ladakh, citing lack of representation in the recently reconstituted body.
In representations submitted to the Chief Secretary of Ladakh and the Member of Parliament from Ladakh, Mohammad requested that the authorities recommend the induction of at least one member from the Noorbakshia community into the Haj Committee. He said the absence of representation raises concerns about inclusivity in the panel responsible for facilitating pilgrimage.
While welcoming the reconstitution of the Haj Committee as a step towards improving administrative arrangements for pilgrims, he noted that the current composition does not adequately reflect the socio-religious diversity of Ladakh.
The activist pointed out that the Noorbakshia community constitutes an important segment of the Muslim population in regions such as Kargil, Drass and Nubra, and said their inclusion would help address community-specific concerns and strengthen broader participation.
He further stated that a more representative committee would contribute to better coordination and ensure that the needs of all sections of the community are taken into account in the management of pilgrimage-related affairs.
Mohammad also extended his congratulations to the newly appointed chairman and members of the Haj Committee, expressing hope that the authorities would consider the request and take steps to broaden representation.
The development comes amid wider discussions on inclusive governance in Ladakh, with calls from various quarters for balanced representation in public institutions.
