Sonamarg to Become a Year-Round Tourism Destination, Says CM Omar Abdullah

Ganderbal, Oct 15: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said the government is working to develop Sonamarg into a year-round tourism destination, with plans to promote summer activities such as rafting and winter sports, including skiing and skating.

Speaking to reporters during his visit to Ganderbal, Omar said the construction of the tunnel had made Sonamarg accessible throughout the year, creating opportunities to expand tourism activities across different seasons.

“With the construction of the tunnel, Sonamarg is now accessible throughout the year. We want to promote rafting during summer and skiing, skating and other winter sports activities,” he said.

The Chief Minister added that he would work with Kangan MLA Mian Mehar Ali to further strengthen Sonamarg’s position as a major tourist destination.

He acknowledged that obtaining forest, environmental and wildlife clearances could delay tourism projects but stressed that all necessary procedures would be followed while developing new destinations.

During the visit, Omar said development projects worth approximately ₹60 crore were either inaugurated or had their foundation stones laid in Ganderbal.

₹40-Crore Bridge Over Jhelum

The Chief Minister reviewed progress on a major bridge over the River Jhelum, estimated to cost ₹40 crore. He said test piling had been completed and efforts were underway to meet the construction timeline.

“We are making efforts to complete the pillars by April and the entire bridge by December next year,” he said.

Several road projects, a new school building and infrastructure works at the Fruit and Vegetable Mandi were also inaugurated during the visit.

Omar said traders at the mandi had raised demands for its expansion, construction of a boundary wall and a grade separator. He added that the issue had been discussed with officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), while other demands had been noted for necessary action.

Canal Fencing and Compensation Issues

Responding to concerns over repeated incidents involving loss of life in the Power Development Corporation (PDC) canal, the Chief Minister said the demand for fencing would be taken up with the concerned authorities.

He said the issue required attention but clarified that the decision was not solely within his authority.

On pending compensation cases linked to National Highway projects, Omar said newly appointed Deputy Commissioner Shreya would examine the matter after settling into her responsibilities.

Balancing Development and Environmental Protection

Addressing traffic congestion along the Beehama–Kheer Bhawani road caused by Chinar trees, the Chief Minister acknowledged the difficulties faced by commuters and called for a practical solution.

He emphasised that infrastructure development and environmental protection must go hand in hand, suggesting that if some trees had to be removed, eight to ten Chinar trees could be planted at alternative locations away from roads.

Referring to the 70th National School Sports event being held at the College of Physical Education in Ganderbal, Omar said students from across the country were participating in Wushu and Taekwondo competitions.

Reiterating the government’s position on land acquisition, the Chief Minister assured affected families that commitments made in signed agreements would be honoured.

“Whatever commitments were made in the signed agreements will be implemented,” he said.
