LEH: Director of the Sheep Husbandry Department, UT Ladakh, Dr. Iftikhar Hussain inaugurated the newly constructed Block Office building at Khaltsi and called for greater emphasis on Pashmina and wool development initiatives to improve the livelihoods of livestock rearers.

Accompanied by District Sheep Husbandry Officer Leh, Dr. Tsewang Morup, the Director interacted with departmental officials and reviewed ongoing field activities linked to livestock development and wool production.

During the visit, Dr. Hussain stressed the importance of conducting comprehensive Pashmina and wool surveys and undertaking sample analysis to generate reliable data that could support efforts to increase production and enhance income opportunities for pastoral communities.

He also highlighted the need for maintaining accurate records of local and crossbred lambs and kids, stating that robust data would play a vital role in future planning and the effective implementation of ram and buck breeding programmes.

The Director underscored the significance of systematic data collection, timely reporting and regular field monitoring for ensuring efficient execution of departmental schemes. He said the success of livestock development programmes depended largely on accurate information and continuous assessment of field-level outcomes.

Officials were advised to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and maintain updated records to facilitate evidence-based decision-making and better resource allocation.

Concluding the visit, Dr. Hussain urged officials to undertake plantation activities within the office premises and promote a clean and environmentally sustainable workplace. He emphasised the importance of maintaining a healthy office environment alongside administrative and technical responsibilities.

The inauguration of the new office building is expected to improve administrative functioning and provide enhanced facilities for implementing sheep husbandry and livestock development programmes in the Khaltsi block.
