WB Voters Will Overcome BJP’s Election Commission Tactics to Re-elect TMC: Akhilesh Yadav

Lucknow, March 23: In a strong show of solidarity, Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday publicly backed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, predicting a decisive voter mandate for her Trinamool Congress (TMC) despite what he described as deliberate hurdles from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) via the Election Commission of India (ECI).

“No matter how many obstacles the BJP creates through the Election Commission, the people of West Bengal will choose Mamata Banerjee’s government,” Yadav asserted in a pointed statement from Lucknow, underscoring his confidence in Bengal’s electorate amid rising political tensions.

The remarks come at a pivotal moment as West Bengal gears up for its next Assembly elections, expected within the next year or so, where Mamata’s TMC seeks to consolidate its dominance after sweeping the 2021 polls with 215 of 294 seats. Yadav’s endorsement highlights the evolving INDIA bloc dynamics, where SP and TMC have forged tactical alliances against the BJP in national and regional contests, including the 2024 Lok Sabha battles that saw the opposition alliance dent BJP’s numbers.

Yadav’s swipe at the ECI echoes long-standing opposition grievances, with TMC repeatedly accusing the poll body of bias under the current dispensation—allegations ranging from delayed permissions for rallies to selective enforcement of the model code during bypolls. Bengal has been a flashpoint for such claims, especially after the 2021 elections marred by post-poll violence and high-stakes defections. The SP leader’s intervention could signal coordinated opposition strategies to portray the BJP as undermining federalism, particularly in states like West Bengal where regional satraps like Mamata hold sway.

Historically, Akhilesh and Mamata have maintained a pragmatic partnership within the INDIA alliance, despite occasional friction over seat-sharing in past polls. SP’s outreach to TMC extends beyond Bengal; Yadav has positioned himself as a key INDIA convener, advocating for unity against BJP’s “divisive politics.” This latest support arrives amid Mamata’s ongoing tussles with the Centre over funds, Adani port projects in Bengal, and central agency probes into her kin and party leaders—issues the opposition frames as vendetta.

BJP spokespersons were quick to dismiss Yadav’s comments as “desperate fear-mongering,” with one senior leader retorting that Bengal’s voters have “wisened up” to TMC’s “syndicate raj” of corruption and cut-money culture. The saffron party, which peaked at 77 seats in 2021 but slumped in 2024 Lok Sabha results, is ramping up its organizational machinery under state president Sukanta Majumdar, eyeing a comeback by capitalising on anti-incumbency.

Yadav’s statement also carries national resonance, as SP eyes alliances in other states like Uttar Pradesh for upcoming urban local body polls. Analysts see it as a preemptive move to bolster opposition morale, especially after recent setbacks like the Maharashtra alliance splits. With West Bengal’s 42 Lok Sabha seats proving crucial in 2024—where TMC won 29—continued SP-TMC synergy could tilt future national equations.

As accusations of ECI partisanship intensify, all eyes are on the Commission’s response and potential judicial interventions. For now, Akhilesh’s vocal backing reinforces Mamata’s fortress-Bengal narrative, setting the stage for a fiercely contested electoral showdown
