NC–Cong alliance focused on Power, not People; Guv’s Rule only way to restore public trust: BJP

Kargil, Feb 24: Political temperatures rose sharply in Kargil on Tuesday after the Bharatiya Janata Party called for the dissolution of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil, citing what it described as a collapse of public trust under the ruling National Conference–Congress alliance.

In a press statement issued, BJP State Media Secretary Mohd Hassan Pasha alleged that recent developments within the Council, coupled with a widely circulated viral video, have triggered public outrage and exposed serious concerns about governance in the district.

The controversy centres on the functioning of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil (LAHDC Kargil), where the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference and the Indian National Congress are in alliance. The BJP has alleged that the coalition has prioritised political survival over public interest, leading to what it termed a visible erosion of democratic accountability.

Referring to the viral video that has gained traction across social media platforms, the BJP statement claimed that it has intensified public anger and raised questions about transparency and intent within the Council. While the contents of the video were not detailed in the release, the party asserted that it has shaken faith in the present dispensation.

The BJP further alleged that the alliance, which had projected itself as principled and aligned with broader national coalitions, now appears to be driven by political arithmetic rather than governance commitments. It maintained that elected councillors are duty-bound to uphold public interest and that any deviation from this mandate undermines democratic norms.

Calling the situation in Kargil “deeply disturbing,” the BJP urged the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh to take immediate cognisance of the matter. The party stated that if the present Council is unable to uphold constitutional responsibility, then constitutional measures, including dissolution of the Council and the imposition of Governor’s Rule in accordance with law, should be considered to restore stability and accountability.

The statement emphasised that the people of Kargil expect clarity and responsible leadership at a time when public confidence appears strained. It added that democracy rests on trust and transparency, and warned against what it described as political opportunism.
