ABUJA, Feb 20: At least 33 people died after Islamic militants launched simultaneous attacks on Biu community in Nigeria’s Kebbi state on Wednesday.
Police spokesman Bashir Usman confirmed the assailants crossed from Sokoto state—controlled partly by the Lakurawa insurgent group—to rustle cattle, prompting a swift security deployment to restore order.
The Lakurawa, active in Sokoto, routinely conducts cattle rustling, village raids, and kidnappings. Northern Nigeria grapples with intertwined threats from Islamic militants and ransom-seeking criminal gangs.
Amid this crisis, Nigeria has bolstered US security ties; earlier this week, 100 American troops arrived to train Nigerian forces against armed groups.
