Amid Blinding Snow, Army’s Romeo Force Tightens Search Net in Pir Panjal Ranges of Poonch

JAMMU, Jan 1: The Indian Army’s elite Romeo Force has ramped up its search and surveillance operations across the snow-clad Pir Panjal ranges in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, even as the region reels under heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures.

Operating at altitudes exceeding 13,000 feet, soldiers are braving severe weather conditions, including biting cold, low visibility, and treacherous mountain paths, to maintain heightened vigilance along the border and forested stretches of the Pir Panjal. The intensified operations come as part of the Army’s ongoing winter patrolling and area domination activities aimed at ensuring security and thwarting any possible infiltration attempts across the Line of Control (LoC).

Visuals from the area show troops equipped with specialised winter gear and snow boots, navigating through deep snow and rugged terrain while maintaining communication through advanced equipment. The soldiers are seen conducting coordinated movements and surveillance drills to secure vulnerable stretches and monitor suspected locations.

According to defence sources, continuous snowfall has made access to high-altitude zones extremely difficult, but the Army continues its mission undeterred. The operations, they said, are both a security measure and a demonstration of the Army’s high state of preparedness during the harsh winter months.

The Romeo Force, a key counter-insurgency unit under the Army’s Nagrota-based White Knight Corps, has been actively safeguarding the Pir Panjal belt—considered one of the most strategically sensitive mountain ranges in the Jammu region—owing to its proximity to the LoC and past incidents of infiltration and militant movement.
