Jammu, Dec 20: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Raman Suri has called upon the government to ensure uninterrupted round the clock electricity supply during the ongoing winter season, warning that frequent and prolonged power cuts are worsening hardships for residents of Jammu, particularly elderly citizens and patients.
Expressing concern over extended daily outages, Suri said several localities of Old Jammu city along with Kunjwani Apna Vihar and Greater Kailash were facing power cuts from morning to afternoon. He said the absence of electricity during peak cold hours had left vulnerable sections exposed to freezing temperatures, increasing health risks and discomfort.
Suri said continuous power supply in winter was a basic requirement as people depend heavily on electric appliances to protect themselves from the cold. He noted that low river water levels during the season had reduced hydroelectric power generation, while demand had risen sharply due to increased domestic consumption across Jammu and Kashmir.
He warned that the combination of high demand and reduced generation could lead to increased load shedding and transformer failures. Such disruptions, he said, often result in public resentment and unrest as electricity affects every household and essential service.
The BJP leader urged the administration to take preventive measures, including arranging additional power supply during peak winter months to avoid prolonged outages. He also stressed the need for strict action against electricity theft, saying unaccounted consumption causes transformer overloads and forces longer power cuts.
Appealing to the public, Suri asked consumers to declare their actual electricity load and cooperate with the power department in metering efforts. He said public participation was necessary to stabilise the supply system.
Suri said electricity becomes a lifeline during severe winters and ensuring reliable supply is an administrative responsibility linked directly to public welfare.
