Leh, Sept 19: Farmers of Martselang village in Kharu were today introduced to improved methods of nutri-cereal cultivation during a training camp organised by the Agriculture Department under the National Food Security Mission. The initiative sought to equip cultivators with practical knowledge on crops such as buckwheat, millets and barley, which hold growing importance in Ladakh’s agro-climatic conditions.
The session was led by District Agriculture Officer Shakeel ur Rehman, assisted by Sub Divisional Agriculture Officer Mohd Ramzan, Agriculture Extension Officers Kunzang Dolma and Tsering Dolkar, Junior Agriculture Extension Officer Stanzin Idong and Dr. Kunzang Lamo. Their guidance centred on field-based solutions and scientific practices designed to enhance crop yield and sustainability.
Beyond nutri-cereal cultivation, the camp highlighted modern farming techniques. Farmers received demonstrations on the package of practices for the Ladakh Green House, preparation of vermicompost, mushroom cultivation and methods of natural farming. The experts also explained departmental schemes currently available to support local agricultural development.
Participants actively engaged in discussions, reflecting the growing interest in diversifying crops and adopting organic-friendly practices suited to Ladakh’s terrain. Officials said such training programmes aim to bridge the knowledge gap among farmers while encouraging sustainable food production in the region.
