Bangkok May 17 : At least eight people were killed and more than 20 injured after a cargo train crashed into a public bus at a railway crossing in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, on Saturday, officials said.
The accident occurred near the Makkasan Airport Rail Link station in the central part of the city. Videos circulating on social media showed several vehicles halted at the crossing when the freight train slammed into an orange bus at the front of the queue.
The impact dragged multiple nearby vehicles along the tracks before the bus caught fire. Several motorcycles and riders were also thrown onto the road in the collision, according to eyewitness footage.
Emergency teams and firefighters rushed to the spot and later entered the charred remains of the bus after bringing the flames under control. Authorities said all fatalities were reported from inside the bus.
Thai officials have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, including reports that the bus may have been stranded on the tracks amid heavy traffic and that the crossing barriers possibly failed to lower properly.
