Katra/Jammu, Dec 28: Authorities have deployed a comprehensive security architecture at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Reasi district to manage the anticipated surge of pilgrims during the New Year celebrations, Inspector General of Police, Jammu, Bhim Sen Tuti announced.
Over 550 CCTV cameras have been installed along the yatra track and surrounding areas, with live feeds monitored around the clock from a centralized control room, the IGP said. The control room operates as a joint facility manned by officials from the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and central armed paramilitary forces, ensuring immediate response to alerts generated through the surveillance system.
The IGP visited Police Station Katra on Saturday to conduct a detailed review of the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), inspecting its operational efficiency, real-time monitoring mechanisms and overall implementation. The review focused on strengthening surveillance, coordination and response systems to ensure smooth management of the pilgrimage.
“The police are focusing on the convergence of technology for effective crowd and security management. Whether it is CCTV feeds, RFID systems or wireless connectivity, all inputs are integrated at one place for better management of the yatra,” Tuti told reporters in Katra, the base camp for pilgrims visiting the shrine.
Referring to New Year preparations, the IGP confirmed that enhanced security measures have been implemented compared to regular days, with several new initiatives introduced this year. Technology-based crowd management systems, including advanced CCTV data analytics to detect overcrowding and enable timely intervention—introduced last year—have been further strengthened for 2025.
During the security review meeting, Tuti underscored the importance of continuous capacity building and directed officers to organize regular, structured training programs for ICCC staff. He emphasized that optimal utilization of technology and skilled manpower is essential to enhance operational effectiveness, improve response times and ensure seamless monitoring and coordination.
The IGP also interacted with probationer Sub-Inspectors during his visit, providing guidance on contemporary and technology-enabled policing practices. He stressed the effective use of modern technological tools in investigations to ensure timely, transparent and professional case handling in line with evolving policing requirements.
The robust security framework aims to provide a safe and smooth experience for the thousands of devotees expected to visit the revered shrine during the New Year period.
